![]() ![]() These national maps, which traced the coastal boundaries of Japan, bound the abstract “collective memory” (as Eiko Ikegami describes it) or the “library of public information” (as Mary Elizabeth Berry describes it) that emerged in the late eighteenth century. To begin with, maps by Mamiya and Inô served as spatial parallels of an emerging “national consciousness” in Japan, one that was taking place in “nativist” (kokugaku) discursive communities around the country. In this article, which appeared in the Journal of Historical Geography, I argue that early modern Japanese maps, specifically those drafted by Mamiya Rinzô (1775-1844) and Inô Tadataka (1745-1818), function in multiple capacities and, therefore, contain layers of “historically specific codes” that, if contextualized properly, enhance our understanding of Japanese history and, more broadly, East Asian history. Mostly, they provided a “geopolitical framework” for nineteenth-century European powers but China and Japan also deployed modern maps to anticipate their empires. ![]() That is, as Daniel Clayton writes, maps provided the scientific “geopolitical framework” for colonial projects. Because maps serve as an “authoritative” resource, one often controlled by the state, they were used to delineate nations and anticipate empires. Historians have become adept at interrogating and deconstructing written documents, but they have proven less adept at exposing the “historically specific codes” contained in maps. Maps can be tricky, however, because, as a product of cartography, they can be disguised as just another “valueless” or “objective” science. ![]() Harley argued that maps represent a kind of historical language, one that speaks as loudly as written documents. Even as the product of cross-cultural negotiations, however, they still proved compelling tools in the anticipation and creation of empire. European mapmakers negotiated with locals for access to geographical information. Michael Bravo, by contrast, has cautioned that even “stable, portable” maps, ones drawn according to the language of science, need to be seen as the results of the cross-cultural production of knowledge. In this manner, maps were stable and movable inscriptions that charted the pathways and borders of the colonial enterprise. Indeed, with the crafting of maps according to the language of science, the “implicit” understanding of locals became “explicit” information used in Europe’s capital cities and “local” ways of knowing succumbed to European “universal” knowledge. In this process, local “beliefs” (of native groups) were transformed into normative “knowledge” to be deployed by European states in elaborate colonial projects. Bruno Latour argued that maps, when crafted by European imperialists according to the “language of science,” and then dispatched to “centers of calculation,” concentrated scientific knowledge in the hands of imperial states. They can depict cadastral surveys they can also depict Buddhist cosmologies. This is certainly true of the maps drawn by Mamiya Rinzô, a collection of beautifully preserved pieces held at the Resource Collection for Northern Studies (Hoppô Shiryô Shitsu) at Hokkaido University.īecause they are such rich sources, and because there are so many kinds, maps can be interpreted in numerous ways. Students learn that maps often represent – and often even drive – major historical events. Of course, maps – particularly pre-modern maps drawn before the global spread of the cartographic sciences – contain marginal text but because they are visual sources, they can, with the aid of an adept teacher, appeal to the creative inclinations of a notoriously visually oriented generation. This is complicated if the student’s interest is Tokugawa Japan, because archival documentation is notoriously difficult to read. Recently, major research universities have pushed the importance of “original” undergraduate research. Because of their power as historical sources, maps also serve as useful pedagogical devices when teaching about Japan. Whether they delineate tidal patterns, measure altitude, chart seafloors, identify ethnic communities, or bind nations, maps provide a potent lens through which people view the world and, in turn, spatially contextualize their experiences. Maps can be powerful tools of nation building and empire, and therefore powerful historical sources. Mamiya Rinzô and the Japanese Exploration of Sakhalin Island: ![]()

For example, given that an image was captured by an image capture device at a particular height above the floor and angle relative to the vertical world axis, a prior probability distribution for that particular image capture device condition can be used in performing a computer vision task on the image. You're going to hear a lot of pros and cons about the just-released iPad version of Capture One, just like you would with any V1 software. The ML model uses a prior probability distribution associated with a particular image capture condition determined based on sensor data. Humans, however, frequently have the benefit of at least some background knowledge or expectations that are useful to such reasoning.įor example, humans often have implicit notions of where certain types of things might be in the areas around them. In the patent Apple says that, like human vision, computer vision tasks generally attempt to reason from one or more images. ![]() ![]() ![]() The conservatory also had a steam-driven, forced-air heating system, indoor plumbing, and heated water in a personal shower. An avid gardener, she constructed a conservatory with an indoor irrigation system, one where plants could be watered at multiple levels. While some of the changes Sarah desired were strange, others were extraordinary. (It’s also rumored that she never slept in the same room twice.) Work only stopped when she died in 1922. It’s said that the closest Sarah ever came to creating a plan was drawing designs on the backs of napkins that she would hand over to workers, only to remove or reshape them within the same week. She designed a house filled with truly bizarre architectural additions, including skylights that cut into the floors above, indoor balconies, doors that open into walls, and other oddities. Without any kind of plan or blueprint, Sarah hired workers to add on to the home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for the 38 years she lived there-and the results were impressive: San Jose’s Winchester Mystery House occupies a sprawling 4.5-acre landscape and features a labyrinth of rooms. She believed that if she ever stopped the “improvements” on the house, she would die, and her 50-percent ownership of the Winchester Arms Company ensured she would be able to continue the work for as long as she wanted. So, she built a home that would not only house their spirits, but also confuse and confound them. Legend has it that she was wracked by the death of her husband, the death of her one-month-old child, and the ghosts of people killed by her husband’s rifles. Sarah Winchester was uncomfortable with her $20 million fortune, which adds up to more than a half-billion dollars when adjusted for inflation. In the 38 years after her arrival, she built more than 150 rooms in the home, complete with 10,000 windows, numerous trap doors, spy holes and stairwells that went to nowhere. She moved from the family home in New Haven, Connecticut, to a small, eight-room farmhouse in San Jose, California. He left his wife, Sarah, a sizable fortune. In 1881, firearms magnate William Wirt Winchester, son of Winchester Repeating Arms founder Oliver Winchester, passed away. The famous Winchester Mystery House has earned a reputation for being one of the most peculiar haunted houses in California, but do you know the ghostly history behind this must-see mysterious attraction ? ![]() ![]()
The few odd rendering moments, pop-ins, and rushed textures that don’t shine in some of the distance shots do very little to take away from the game’s overall presentation. It looks like butter in motion, and still has a fresh car smell even when it isn’t quite perfect. I wasn’t expecting to be impressed with how vibrant parts of the game looked and the smoothness at which it ran. Serious Sam 4 is absolutely gorgeous in some areas. That’s a good way to sum up Serious Sam 4’s difficulty and its glitches: amusing, a tad frustrating, but laughing makes it better. The cutscene began to play as if I had won, but when it finished, the game told me I had failed and started me back at the previous checkpoint. One time I died on a secondary mission, just as the final enemy and I killed each other in a glorious showdown. SERIOUS SAM 4 REVIEWS MANUALThe game addresses this though and recommends reverting to a previous save, and thankfully players are allowed to make manual saves at almost any time. This sadly causes several death loops, where a bad save will have the player dying almost as soon as they spawn. ![]() The game offers many checkpoints, but when death occurs, it respawns Sam a bit back with little to help him succeed, expecting the player to simply figure out what they did wrong. ![]() When everything hits, the fighting gets rough. ![]() More enemies come, stronger ones start rushing Sam in packs, and the various types of enemies mix to create more of a challenge. Things can get difficult after those first few sections. The main game isn’t very long, depending on the difficulty the player chooses and how much they die on the larger encounters, but for those who enjoy the gameplay, it won’t take much encouragement to go back through the game again. Sometimes the side quests are tougher than the main encounters, and they aren’t always rewarding, but select ones are how Sam gets extra upgrades for his weapons. There are main story objectives, which are noted by yellow markers, and several side objectives, shown with blue symbols. SERIOUS SAM 4 REVIEWS UPGRADEI enjoyed the talents as well, when I could find the points to upgrade them, and using those along with Sam’s growing arsenal is a pleasure. Not a deal-breaker by any means, but it felt like a light bit of railroading. The enemies I thought I had skipped simply rushed me a few moments later while I was still finishing off the first group and rolled over me. In several areas, the designers wanted the player to approach a large group of enemies a specific way, but trying to find a way around them or a different path of assault wound up in disaster. A more substantial complaint I have is how the game doesn’t seem to reward creativity. The weapon wheel can be a bit annoying at first, sticking or not pulling up the highlighted item, as well as having a small glitch where I couldn’t immediately turn left or right for a moment after exiting that menu. The controls are tight, standard for the first-person shooter genre, and easy to use. The weapons are fun and some of the boss fights were nice and hectic, keeping me engaged and satisfied to reach that calm after a big battle. I was never bored and nothing felt truly monotonous, even fighting the same enemies over and over again. It may seem repetitive to some: enter area, shoot everything, cross the threshold into a new zone, run away and shoot again, with the occasional vehicle or mech section to try and keep things inspired. What Serious Sam 4 provides is some badass action. The world has been overrun by an evil alien dictator and the player is going to take control of Sam Stone to make sure he and his team can make them pay. Other than this giving the developers, Croteam, the chance to play with some different characters, there isn’t too much to note. As someone who has played every main title in the series, I figured this had to be some sort of alternate reality or reboot, but it turns out we’re just in a prequel. For those scratching their brains, trying to remember if they’ve ever played one of these before, you’ll remember it as soon as that first horde of guys with bombs for hands comes screaming toward you in Serious Sam 4. SERIOUS SAM 4 REVIEWS SKINIt’s a franchise that tries to throw as much as it can at a player and gives them just enough equipment to get out of the situation by the skin of their teeth. ![]() It’s ridiculous, slightly absurd, and just a touch to the left or right of being truly great. SERIOUS SAM 4 REVIEWS SERIESThe Serious Sam series is anything but - that’s the joke. ![]() ![]() ![]() Two mashups of tracks by David Guetta and LMFAO are perfect examples. Like The Grey Album, they can even become just as famous (or more so) than the original songs. If they’re done well, mashups can fundamentally change how people remember songs. A more complex mashup might alternate between two different melodies while using an acapella from a third song. Whatever method you choose, keep in mind that the most common (and accessible) mashups take the beat from one song and the vocals from another. #Mashup maker online software#You can use your DJ mixing setup to produce a mashup live in a club, or you can use software tools like Ableton Live, Logic, Cubase, or Mixed In Key Mashup to make one ahead of time and save it as an MP3. With that warning in mind, there are a number of ways to make them. Mashups can be powerful, but it’s best to use them in moderation. Even worse, you might piss off the club manager, which means you’ve lost any chance of coming back. ![]() Mixing five huge dance anthems together might energize a crowd, but to a lot of devoted fans of dance music, it degrades the clubbing experience. Of course, there’s also a not-so-fine line that separates a mashup as masterful as The Grey Album from a cheap, cheesy knockoff. ![]() It was a work of genius, and needless to say, when it leaked online in 2004, it also stirred up a lot of legal questions about sampling, rights ownership and copyright control. Probably the most well-known (and controversial) mashup ever made was Danger Mouse’s The Grey Album, which mashed the solo vocals from Jay-Z’s The Black Album together with digitally chopped selections of Beatles songs from their classic White Album. One way is to create a mashup.Īt its most basic, a mashup blends two songs together to create a new one, but there’s really no limit to the number of sampled elements it can contain. There are a few more ways you can differentiate your sound, even when you’re playing the same tracks as another DJ. ![]() ![]() One such extension is Right Click to Gmail. #GOOGLE CHROME NOT OPENING OUTLOOK LINKS FULL#Related | 2 Ways to Set Custom Google Chrome Profile Picture Method 3- Use Right Click to Gmail Extension (Windows, Mac)Ĭhrome Web Store is full of useful extensions. #GOOGLE CHROME NOT OPENING OUTLOOK LINKS WINDOWS#Now clicking on any email address link will open it up in Gmail in Chrome on your Windows PC.
